The garden, which he tended, and the house are both open for tours; if you ask, you might be able to peek into the workshop, where he continued building until his death in 2009 at the age of 93. Hopetoun House is famous as one of Scotland’s most beautiful stately homes. It is renowned for its stunning architecture and lavish interiors, designed by prominent Scottish architects Sir William Bruce and William Adam. Doheny’s father was mired in the Teacup Dome Scandal at the time, and the deaths meant that he was excused from testifying; rumors also abounded that Ned, who was married with children, was trying to cover up a same-sex affair. When the home was finished in 1929, it cost a reported $3M, making it the most expensive private home in the city at the time.
The salon is one of the more vibrantly colored rooms in the mansion, with glossy red walls.
Inside Hopetoun House, visitors can get an experience of how the seriously wealthy Earls of Hopetoun would have lived in the 1700’s. The magnificent interiors boast fine paintings, original furnishings and décor. You wander through the house at your own pace and guides are on hand to answer questions.
There's plenty of space to lounge around in the family living room.

Linlithgow Palace Visitor Guide
Though visitors only see about half of the original house, it’s well-preserved with an interesting mix of Spanish, Mission and ranchero influences. Hopetoun House is often overlooked by visitors to Edinburgh, but it is one of the most splendid examples of Georgian architecture in Britain, and is only a short drive to the west of Edinburgh. The path to the deer park is on the edge of the estate and overlooks the water. The hedgerow here is tall, and it’d be a very romantic setting if you were in the right company. In all honesty, though, I had goose bumps the entire time I was inside the house because it felt so weird to walk around freely in someone else’s living room when they weren’t there. Although the ticket lady said we shouldn’t touch anything, absolutely nothing stood in our way if we took it into our heads to flop down onto the ornate couches and antique chairs (we were good visitors and restrained ourselves, in case you were worried).
He was the one who decided on their profession, sending them off to MIT and then demanding they move out to Pasadena once they graduated. No word on whether he determined their style as well, but no matter who the progenitor, this graceful house originally built for one of the heirs of the Proctor & Gamble fortune remains one of the best examples of their work. However you decide to experience it, don’t miss the remarkable zig-zag staircase, a joyous element that adds a bit of fun to the perfection of the house.
The magnificent interiors of Hopetoun House; which have remained virtually unchanged for three centuries reflect the elegance of the Georgian era. They are decorated with the best period furniture, paintings, tapestries and clocks, with beautifully crafted finishes of carving, gilding and plaster work. Craig Neil is the author, photographer, admin, and pretty much everything else behind Out About Scotland. He lives near Edinburgh and spends his free time exploring Scotland and writing about his experiences.
I was quite nervous at first because the deer weren’t in the first few fields of the park. But if you just keep going further back, you’ll eventually find them. If you’ve only seen the white tailed deer in the US, you’re in for a real treat! After exploring every inch of the home, we began our tour of the estate.
There are no busses that run close to the house, so your only option is to drive there. Known as Scotland’s Finest Stately Home, Hopetoun House was commissioned by Lady Margaret Hamilton in 1699 for her son, Charles. Lady Margaret’s husband, Sir John Hope, had purchased the land years prior but unfortunately died in a shipwreck before any architectural plans for the home could be drawn up. A wheelchair can be organised for visitors to borrow, and additional seating is available. The Charter Room can be accessed by a steps or platform lift and there is ramped access to the Ballroom and Tapestry Room toilets.
Where would we be without those energetic civic boosters that built Los Angeles? The prolific Charles Fletcher Lummis founded the Southwest Museum, was an editor at the Los Angeles Times, and still managed to design this house (the name of which means “the Sycamore” in Spanish) on the banks of the Arroyo Seco. Its exterior is made almost entirely from river rock and the interior is heavily influenced by Pueblo Indian dwellings. Fans of today’s DIY movement will appreciate the rustic Craftsman charm of this home, which is furnished with hand-crafted wood pieces; it’s interesting to see how closely modern-day bohemian design mirrors that of Lummis House.
