The organization is self-sufficient due to its many patrons and yearly cookie sales to raise funds. Inspired by the work of Lord Baden-Powell, founder of Boy Scouts, Juliette Gordon Low joined the Girl Guide movement in England. Later, she formed her own group of Girl Guides there in 1911. In 1912 she returned to the States and established the first U.S. In 1915, the United States’ Girl Guides became known as the Girl Scouts. In 1979, she was inducted into the National Women’s Hall of Fame.
Coining History
Elizabeth and James Moore Wayne had the house built in 1821 at the corner of Bull and South Broad (Oglethorpe Avenue today) and one of the prime intersections in Savannah. James, a lawyer and judge, eventually served as a Justice of the United States Supreme Court. Wright’s design was completed in 1925 and shortly thereafter in 1926 the Freeman’s began to undertake a series of interior alterations which reflected their personal tastes rather than Wrights. The owners commissioned notable modernist architect and Wright protégé Rudolf Schindler to design and supervise the work.
Preservation Timeline
Ramsay is certainly one of the best chefs in the world, that is without a doubt. His success is plastered all over the spotlight and he has been given incredible opportunities that other chefs have not come close to. He sits up there with some of the most amazing chefs in the world including Joël Robuchon, Alain Ducasse, Thomas Keller and Yoshihiro Murata. After Schindler’s death, the Freeman’s engaged several prominent Southern California architects early in their careers. These include Gregory Ain, John Lautner, and Eric Lloyd Wright, all of whom contributed to the architectural legacy of the residence. The Birthplace has preserved Juliette Gordon Low's legacy for close to70years.
Tours & Events
In 1986, at the time of Harriet’s death, the home was donated to the University of Southern California’s (USC) School of Architecture who stewarded the property until its sale in 2022. As part of a condition of the sale, the property is now under a conservation easement with the Los Angeles Conservancy. In February of that year, the Freeman House was sold to a new private owner with the easement in place.

Although the house itself is interesting … it is not primarily for its historic interest that the Girl Scouts have bought it. In 2000, a strategic planning session identified ten restoration projects needed to enable the site to more effectively serve girls. Included in this list was the renovation of program rooms, stabilization and repair of the central staircase, and renovation of the ground floor of the main house for a ticketing area, shop area, and program space for girls.
She is best remembered for her sheer determination and tireless efforts to promote and sustain the organization through the early part of the twentieth century. In 1953, the house was saved from the threat of demolition when Girl Scouts of the USA purchased the birthplace. In true Girl Scout style, Girl Scouts then led a major fundraising effort to support the incredible restoration project that followed.

The 8,200sqft property is located in Bel-Air and reportedly cost him $6.75 million (photos below!). Following the property’s donation to USC by Harriett, the Freeman House experienced significant damage caused by the 1994 Northridge earthquake. In 2000, after the building was deemed uninhabitable, USC commenced with seismic repair and stabilization of the house. At that time many of the interior fittings and finishes were removed and placed in storage.

Nice as it is to own this house and restore it to its former beauty, it is not to be a period piece unrelated to the life of Girl Scouts in the second half of the twentieth century. If we merely preserved her home, we would fail to realize completely the possibilities of her birthplace. The wood framing of the building was analyzed and reinforced where needed and in 2009, staff were able to move into new offices on the top floor.
Two apartments occupied each floor of the main house except the basement and top floor, which remained empty. The side porch, or piazza, was enclosed as a bedroom, and on the upper floor a small kitchen projected out from the building’s façade. Its role as the family seat continued when Daisy’s father bought the house after his mother’s death. Daisy’s family had deep connections to the house and lived close by. As children, she and her cousins played together there regularly and the newly renovated house was the center of Daisy’s marriage activities. Starting at the age of 12, Gordon was sent to a number of different boarding schools in the north and south to obtain a good education. Low liked to socialize with her classmates and attend balls. Despite having a good education, spelling and grammatical errors permeate her letters throughout her life. Some historians speculate that she may have had a learning disability such as dyslexia. Known as the founder of the Girl Scouts, Juliette Gordon Low created the largest and most successful organization for girls in the world.
